HOMETOWN HAPPENINGS: Help us keep an Eye out for Clarkstown’s Safety

By Supervisor George Hoehmann

Technology. We all rely on it for many aspects of our daily lives. There is always something new around the corner, on even a daily basis: new phones, new tablets, new devices, new gadgets, new apps—new everything. You can do a lot of things in an instant. The speed by which we can accomplish a few tasks while waiting for a cup of coffee is impressive, when you take a moment to think about it.

There are, unfortunately, some things that never change. There are still some people who will act badly and commit crimes.

The good news is that we can use the technology many of us use in our homes and businesses—security cameras—to deter against criminal activity and more easily find those who violate our property rights and personal safety. Even better? You can join Clarkstown Police Department’s crime fighting team by joining a voluntary program that will do a great deal to make would-be criminals and vandals think twice about harming you and your neighbors.

If you have a security camera installed outside of your home or business you can help keep Clarkstown safe by participating in the Video Surveillance Camera Registration Program. The voluntary program allows citizens and business owners to register the locations of their video surveillance systems with the Clarkstown PD.

Using the geographic locations of the registered cameras, the police will be able to request footage from program participants for a specific date and time. If the police believe you may have evidence, they can contact you for video retrieval. It is important to note that the Police Department does NOT have unfettered, direct and remote access to the cameras that are registered. This is an enhanced Community Watch program for the 21st century.

It is very easy and quick to register. Please visit our website and click the police badge on the top right, and then click video surveillance registration program.

The more residents and businesses who register, the more successful and helpful this program will be.   This program is a true partnership between our community and police department.   Clarkstown is consistently rated as one of the safest communities in the nation. Let’s keep it that way.
