Students at the Rockland BOCES Hilltop School in Haverstraw have started the new year with creativity.

Art instructor Erin Girling led a school-wide exploration into the work of influential Russian painter and art theorist Wassily Kandinsky. Students and staff each designed and created one square with an eight-inch circle, based on Kandinsky’s Concentric Circle color study.

Everyone was encouraged to be mindful while creating and urged to let go of preconceived ideas regarding artistic talent and abilities, allowing full enjoyment of the creative process. Students learned about the life and art of Kandinsky, while contributing to a breathtaking mural now living in the school’s reception area.

The collaborative piece acts as a symbol of the Hilltop family!

New circles will be added to the mural as new staff and students enter the school throughout the year.
