Redshirt freshman guard Kelly Guarino of Thiells has been selected to the Atlantic Sun Conference All-Freshman team, as the league office announced postseason honors and awards Wednesday. Making a long road back from her third major knee injury since Guarino began high school, she becomes the first NJIT women’s basketball player to receive postseason honors since NJIT joined the Atlantic Sun Conference.

Guarino ranks second on the team in points (8.4 ppg).  She has recorded three 20+ scoring performances, including a career-best 24 points after connecting on 7 of her 16 3-point field goal attempts and 8-for-17 from the floor overall against Virginia, from the highly-regarded Atlantic Coast Conference on December 5.

She has connected on at least one three-pointer in 24 of NJIT’s 29 contests (high of 7 at Virginia). Guarino ranks fourth in the A-Sun in three-point percentage (36.0) and three-point field goals made (total 62 | 2.2 per game).

Guarino moves into third all-time in the Division I era at NJIT with 62 three-point baskets made. The record stands at 77 by Denisa Domiterova (2011-12). NJIT (1-13 A-Sun, 4-25) will be the eighth-seed and open the 2016 A-Sun tournament at runaway first-place winner Florida Gulf Coast (14-0 A-Sun, 26-4) on Friday, March 4 at 7 p.m.
