Rockland Communities Release Schedule for Great American Cleanup

Beginning in April Keep Rockland Beautiful will gather more than 4,000 volunteers to remove tons of litter from Rockland’s streets, parks and waterways during the 2016 Great American Cleanup Campaign.

Saturday, April 2, two large-scale Community Cleanup Events – in Nanuet and Hillburn – will kick off the two-month campaign. In addition to providing litter-grabbing supplies, these events give cleanup volunteers a central reporting site, snacks and a venue for sharing stories on some of the unexpected trash they encounter. And young trash-hunters can win a prize by finding “Cleanup KiRBy,” the KRB gnome mascot who hides under litter.

Each event has a unique approach. DPW Supervisor Tommy Conklin and the Village of Hillburn will host the Hillburn Community Cleanup Event at The Hillburn Youth Center. As they do every year, they will provide both breakfast and lunch to volunteers. At the Nanuet Community Cleanup Event, Raymour & Flanigan will provide a warm host site for volunteers to grab supplies, refreshments and safety guidelines before tackling the town’s trash.

Shannon Purdy, KRB Board President and the Nanuet Event leader says, “We owe it to our families and neighbors to get rid of the accumulated trash that surrounds us – and get the word out to prevent littering from happening in the first place. Every community is made by many smaller communities who want to make a difference.  All it takes is a little curiosity and compassion to make things right.”
