Congers man on bicycle killed by Rockland County bus on Rt. 303

WEST NYACK – A 77-year-old Congers man was killed Sunday when he was struck by a Rockland County bus in West Nyack, according to Clarkstown police. The 3 p.m. accident and the investigation led to a six-hour shut down of Route 303 just north of the Palisades Center mall, with the roadway closed to traffic until about 9 p.m. on Sunday.

Police said Edward Brophy, 77, of Congers, sustained severe injuries in the accident and he died at Nyack Hospital. Brophy, police said, was struck by a 2005 Tappan Zee Express bus as it was making a left turn onto Route 303 from North Palisades Center Drive to travel north.

The bus, driving by a 47-year-old Spring Valley man, was not carrying passengers at the time. The driver was not injured. The Clarkstown Police Accident Investigation Team is conducting an investigation and the cause of the accident is still unknown.

Police believe Brophy was riding alone and was heading southbound on Route 303, traveling on the left side of the road. A forum on bicycle safety has been called by local authorities and a date will be announced shortly.
