West Nyack woman victimized by hacking scam

WEST NYACK – A local woman was reportedly victimized by a scammer who told her that her computer data had been compromised.

Clarkstown PD said the 20-year old woman received a call from a fake number on Sunday night at about 7 p.m. The caller, an unknown male, informed her that her computer had been accessed by Russian hackers and informed her that if she wanted to keep the data stored on it, she would have to grant the caller remote access.

The caller also informed the woman she would have to transfer $3,000 to $5,000 to keep her files and financial information safe. When she refused to pay, all the data was wiped from her machine. Though she consulted Apple customer service, they were unable to recover her data.

Clarkstown Police have advised residents not to grant remote access to anybody whom they do not know or trust and to contact local police if they have received similar suspicious calls.
