Accident involving backhoe and SUV leaves one in critical condition

A serious accident between a Volkswagon SUV and a backhoe occurred on a stretch of Rt 17 in Sloatsburg that has been under road construction recently. Around 5:30 p.m., Ramapo PD responded to the area of 245 Route 17 in Sloatsburg near Sunnyside Restaurant for an accident with injuries.

The initial investigation revealed that a backhoe was traveling north in the left hand lane of Route 17, when a 2013 Volkswagon, also traveling north in the left hand lane drove into the rear of the backhoe, parts of which smashed through the injured party’s windshield.

Police have not determined which, if either, party is to blame in the accident and continue to investigate.

The driver of the 2013 Volkswagon was identified as 44-year-old Melissa Fierman of Tuxedo, N.Y.  She was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital via ambulance with head and face injuries, and was later transported to Westchester Medical Center. She was in critical condition as of Friday night.
