Matterhorn Nurseries sold on auction block to developer — community wonders, what will be built on the property?

Legal and real estate sources have confirmed that the Matterhorn Nursery property in  New Hempstead sold at auction on July 22 for approximately $5.2 million. The past owners of the property owed the bank about $4.1 million in debt, giving them a $1.1 million revenue on the sale.

The name of the buyer has not been released from the Clerk’s Office yet, but it is widely reported in Rockland County circles that the buyer is a developer from outside the county, possibly from as far north as Montreal.

The land in question contains many wetlands. The business intentions of the new developer are uknown at this time.

Matterhorn had been a mainstay in Rockland for decades until it closed in 2010 due to poor sales. It was auctioned off in 2012 and now again in 2014.
