4 P.M. Nanuet Fuel Spill Update

(10:30 p.m. update – Rt. 59 has been reopened)

4 p.m., Sgt. Glenn Cummings, Town of Clarkstown Police Department:

“At this time, Rt. 59 remains from closed from Middletown Rd. to Smith Street in Nanuet.  College Ave. remains closed from First St. to West Nyack Rd.  The driver of the truck was a 44-year-old male. He complained of a minor shoulder injury and was transported to Nyack Hospital by Nanuet Volunteer Ambulance Corp. His injuries are minor and not life threatening.

“The accident occurred when the truck being operated, a diesel supply truck, was travelling eastbound on Rt. 59 attempting to make a left turn onto College Ave. The truck was carrying 3,300 gallons of number 2 diesel fuel. Most of the fuel has been contained at the site of the accident. Some diesel fuel has leaked into nearby storm drains. Residents of the area south of the accident scene may smell the fumes. We ask that residents keep their windows and doors closed so as to minimize their exposure to the fumes.

“A Ready Clarkstown call out is in the process of being sent out to alert the surrounding community. There are multiple fire departments on scene as well as Rockland County Haz Mat Response Team for remediation of the site. There is no time frame of how long traffic in the area will be disrupted.  Further updates will be provided as information becomes available.”
