ROCKLAND COUNTY CELEBRATES ADOPTION AT LOCAL WENDY’S

Each year, through different venues, the Rockland County Department of Social Services’ (DSS) Children’s Services Unit acknowledges and shows its appreciation to the selfless families who have opened their home and adopted their foster child(ren). This year, for the second year in a row, staff is joining with local Wendy’s franchisees to celebrate National Adoption Month. Rockland County’s DSS Foster and Adoptive Families have been invited for a meal, compliments of Wendy’s, at one of three Wendy’s locations in Rockland County from 5 – 8 p.m. on Wednesday, November 20, 2013. In addition, Children’s Services staff will be available to answer questions from individuals interested in becoming foster/adoptive parents.

Foster home recruitment is a key element to the success of adoptions in our County. In 95 percent of cases, adoptive parents have been the child’s foster family. Last year, 14 children had their adoptions finalized and were adopted by their foster families. “Although this event recognizes the compassion and tireless efforts of adoptive parents, its purpose is also to raise awareness of the number of children in our community who are waiting for loving and caring homes,” said Susan Sherwood, Commissioner of Social Services.

Wendy’s founder Dave Thomas was adopted and spent much of his life promoting the cause of adoption. He founded the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption based on his belief that every child deserves a loving home. Wendy’s Franchisees Greg Dunn (Airmont), Lee Magnes & Kevin Woodside (Nanuet) and Phillip Anastos (West Haverstraw) carry on Dave Thomas’ legacy with their continued support of adoption.
