LOG CABIN REPUBLICANS SAY GAY MARRIAGE IS CONSISTENT WITH CONSERVATISM

ALBANY, NEW YORK— Log Cabin Republicans of New York State Chairman Steve Keblish issues the following statement:

“How should the Supreme Court Rule on the landmark gay rights cases before it this week? William F. Buckley’s lens for evaluating issues went like this: “Does this augment or diminish human liberty?” When asked about gay marriage, Dick Cheney said, “Freedom means freedom for everyone.” And Mr. Conservative himself, Barry Goldwater, was an outright supporter of gay rights. Granting gay and lesbian Americans the freedom to marry is a conservative cause and the court’s conservatives should rule accordingly.

“While I certainly believe in the power of ideas and debate, the competing notions of marriage should not prevent families headed by same-sex couples from the enjoying the protections and benefits that marriage offer. Family values start with valuing families. As an armed service member and a fiancé, I have assumed duties to defend our nation and to start a new family. The freedom I fight for should not apply any less to us because my partner and I share the same gender.

“Even though the state of New York will recognize our marriage, DOMA will restrict my partner from receiving all the benefits that other military spouses do. We hope the Supreme Court shares a duty and commitment to the Constitution’s guarantees of liberty and fairness and affirms the freedom to marry for all as it reaches its decisions.”
