MONSEY MAN SENTENCED TO 14 YEARS FOR CHILD SEX ABUSE

A Monsey man convicted in August of raping a female child over the course of six years, has been sentenced to 14 years in state prison, the DA’s Office announced on Wednesday.

Eliyahu Zarifa, a resident of 242-H Kearsing Parkway, Monsey, who will turn 47 on March 1, was also sentenced to 10 years post-release supervision. All told he will be under some form of under supervision possibly until he is 70-years-old. He will also have to register as a sex offender under Megan’s Law.

Zarifa was charged with having a sexual intercourse with a female child over the course of six years, beginning when the child was 10. The victim, now 17, is known to the defendant. At about the time the victim disclosed the ongoing sexual abuse, the defendant fled to Israel. He returned shortly after the disclosure and was arrested by detectives with the Spring Valley Police Department.

District Attorney Zugibe said, “The courage and poise displayed by the victim when she first came forward and during sentencing was undeniable. In this case, the defendant occupied a position of trust, but chose to violate that responsibility in the most odious way, leaving a young woman physically and emotionally scarred. The lengthy prison sentence meted out by the court is more than warranted.”

In August, Zarifa was found guilty of one count of course of sexual conduct against a child in the first degree, a class “B” felony.
