Village of Haverstraw to Rededicate Long Lost John Andre/Benedict Arnold Cannon Monument

Join the Village of Haverstraw on Saturday, September 22 at 11 a.m. on the grounds of Emeline Park to celebrate an important part of village history– one that may well have changed the course of the Revolutionary War. The village will be rededicating the John Andre/Benedict Arnold Cannon Monument which used to reside on the side of Route 9W near the Clarkstown border.

The cannon was lost many years ago and county legislator and village attorney Jay Hood Jr. said it was always a goal of his late father and previous village attorney J. Nelson Hood Sr. to rededicate the monument. As such, Hood Jr. has made sure his father’s vision became a reality.

“In honor of my father’s decades of service to the village, my family has donated a replica cannon to be placed at its new site on Emeline Park, near Civile’s restaurant. We will also place the attached plaque for my dad near the monument. Thank you to Ron Olori, Tilcon and DPW George White and his crew for getting this done in time for the weekend. Moving six ton rocks is not an easy task! Of course, another big thank you to Mayor Kohut and the village board for allowing the monument to have a new home where it can viewed more easily by our residents and visitors,” Hood Jr. said.
