NORTH ROCKLAND SCHOOL DISTRICT TAX CAP UPDATE

Submitted by Diego Aviles
Update from North Rockland School District COTW meeting last night. The current proposed 2012-2013 budget increase is 1.76 percent, which will result in a 2.69 percent tax levy increase. This does not mean that taxes will be going up 2.69 percent. It could be more or it could be less. There are many factors that still need to come to play such as equalization and assessment rates, which are not set till later this spring or early summer. For example last year’s budget increase of 1.5 percent resulted in Haverstraw residents paying an additional 7.9 percent in their school taxes, while Stony Point residents realized a decrease. If the approved budget passes with a 2.69 percent tax levy increase, there still needs to be currently about $888,258 that will be cut from the budget. If the budget fails, an additional $4,363,399 would need to be cut.
