HOMETOWN HAPPENINGS: Thank you for your service

By Supervisor George Hoehmann

On November 1, 2017, the Town of Clarkstown held our second annual Veteran’s Day appreciation ceremony and breakfast at the Street Community Center in New City. Over 200 local veterans attended the event. This year, we had the honor of having Megan Leavey, a US Marine Corp Veteran and Purple Heart recipient, as our key note speaker.

Megan Leavey is a Clarkstown native who grew up right here in Valley Cottage attending Nyack schools. A movie about her true life story was released earlier this year. It’s the story of a young marine corporal whose unique discipline and bond with her military combat dog saved many lives during their deployment in Iraq and her mission to bring him home after they both honorably left the military.

Her bravery, heroism and loyalty are truly admirable. The Town of Clarkstown is so very proud to call her one of our own and to have her tell her story at this year’s ceremony.

The fifth grade students from the Little Tor Elementary School Select Choir proudly sang a variety of patriotic songs throughout the ceremony. They were a talented group of students and really added a nice touch to the ceremony bringing our youth and senior veterans together.

A special thank you to the Clarkstown Police Department, especially the Honor Guard and Firing Team for truly making this a respectful and professional ceremony. Thank you to Bridges of Rockland County and the County Veteran’s Agency for their help.

I would also like to thank all the families and businesses who participated in the Town of Clarkstown Military Tribute Banner Program, whose contributions sponsored the breakfast. All our military tribute banners hung in our hamlet centers for the last six months will be coming down after Veteran’s Day. We will commence the program again in the spring of 2018.

We want our veterans and service members to always feel appreciated in the Town of Clarkstown. Our local veterans, and active duty service members, are our heroes, and we will continue to honor them with programs like our veterans breakfast and military tribute banners.

To all our veterans on this Veteran’s Day and every day, thank you for your service!
