BY BARRY WARNER

When fire strikes, people take it for granted that a call for help will be answered. There are volunteers, such as firemen and members of Ladies Auxiliaries, who willingly contribute their time and energy to keep the communities safe. They share an unselfish commitment, as good neighbors, to serve wherever the crises occur.

Historically, the function of the Ladies Auxiliary was to assemble food and refreshments for the firefighters while they were engaged in a Signal 13 or extended firefighting operations day and night. As the organizations have evolved, the auxiliaries participate in various community functions, fundraising and marching with the fire departments at local parades.

Long-term members of the Orangetown Fire Company #1 Nyack Fire District Ladies Auxiliary include Carolyn Caglione (President), Eileen Colarell (Vice President), as well as Theresa O’Shea, Conchetta Dellolio, Lois DeZago, Dorina Maragliano and Maryann Wortendyke.

Long-term members of the SW Johnson Steam Fire Engine Company #1 Garnerville Ladies Auxiliary include Barbara Babcock (President), Beverly Ferrer, Cathy Fratello, Carmella Grau, Marily Lobbe (County Auxiliary Chaplain) and Barbara Call.
