Program to Train Unemployed for Healthcare Jobs Coming to Rockland County May 22

Jobs Waiting, a regional effort that helps long-term unemployed individuals get back to work, while helping employers find, hire, and train qualified candidates, is coming to Rockland County on May 22.

The program offers a professional skills assessment, one-on-one career counseling, career readiness workshops, financial planning, social media training, mentoring, interview practice, resume development, and opportunities to network with healthcare employers.

And thanks to the $9.8 million federal grant, which funds the program, these services are free to the participants. At the end of the training, Jobs Waiting participants are either placed in a job, a paid work tryout, or may receive tuition subsidies for further training at local educational institutions or approved training providers. Awarded to the Westchester-Putnam Workforce Development Board, the grant program is managed by the Westchester County Association in partnership with seven counties in the Hudson Valley, including Rockland County.

This is the second time a Jobs Waiting boot camp will be offered in Rockland County.  Jodanna Finch graduated from the first session last fall, and said the program helped her to regain her confidence and obtain further industry credentials.

“The instructors were phenomenal. I revamped my resume, learned how to position my strengths, and overcame my fear of public speaking,” said Finch, who recently earned a MBA from Empire State College. “Jobs Waiting also helped me to earn an additional certification in Human Resources Management.”

Finch hopes to get a job in human resources at a healthcare organization. Program graduates also have incentives to offer employers to hire them: The program will pay a stipend equal to 100 percent of the trainee’s wages during a six-week tryout and up to 90 percent of wages for on-the-job training. Over 360 people have gone through the “boot camp” portion so far, with 160 now employed in clinical and office positions in healthcare organizations throughout the region.
