CSX train bursts into flames

trainWednesday morning at 7:50 a.m. Clarkstown PD responded to a report of a fire on a southbound CSX freight train in the Congers area.

Clarkstown police officers and firemen from Congers, Valley Cottage and New City Fire Departments, as well as Congers Volunteers Ambulance Corps members arrived on the scene shortly after the call and found one of two locomotives had a small fire onboard. No injuries were reported.

None of the freight cars were carrying oil, police said. The potential of an oil spill from a CSX train accident has been a concern to the public and many elected officials.

The train was located approximately ½ mile north of the Lake Road Congers train crossing when it caught fire. The incident is being investigated.
