Indian Point Unit 2 automatically and safely shut down Wednesday around 9:30 a.m. The automatic shutdown occurred at the same time technicians were testing electrical systems that are designed to automatically shut down the reactor if needed, Entergy said.
The exact cause is under investigation. There was no release of radioactivity and no effect on public or worker health or safety, the energy company said in a press release. Equipment operated as designed and control room operators responded as expected during the shutdown.
Indian Point Unit 3 remains at full power and has been online for 203 continuous days.
Indian Point Energy Center, in Buchanan, N.Y., is home to two operating nuclear power plants, unit 2 and unit 3, which generate approximately 2000 megawatts of electricity for homes, business and public facilities in New York City and Westchester County.
