One of Senator Chuck Schumer’s aides to this area was arrested Monday afternoon for possession of about 200 anabolic steroid pills.
Cody Peluso, 32, of Carmel, Putnam County, was arrested following a traffic stop and charged with three counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance. He was also in possession of two pills of suboxone and one pill of xanax.
Peluso has been Senator Schumer’s Hudson Valley regional director for several years and earns $62,500 per year plus benefits. As of Tuesday, he was listed on the United States’ official government website as a current employee of Schumer’s.
Schumer’s office responded to the news of Peluso’s arrest, which was reported first by the Rockland County Times on www.rocktimes.com.
“We are shocked and saddened by this news. Mr. Peluso will immediately be placed on leave pending a complete investigation of this incident,” said Jason Kaplan, spokesman for Sen. Schumer
The traffic stop commenced when a license plate scan found the man’s vehicle registration was suspended. Police said Peluso also had his driver’s license revoked due to prior violations.
He apparently consented to a vehicle search during which police say they discovered the controlled substances.
His boss had earlier this year proposed $600 million in funding to fight heroin and other opiates. One of the controlled substances Peluso was allegedly found in possession of, suboxone, is a member of the opiate family, although it is most often prescribed to help addicts get off of heroin or oxycodone.
