HEALTH DEPARTMENT WORKING TO MAKE ROCKLAND A BREASTFEEDING FRIENDLY COMMUNITY

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT FROM THE ROCKLAND HEALTH DEPT.

Rockland County Executive Ed Day and County Health Commissioner Dr. Patricia Schnabel Ruppert encourage residents, health care providers, day care providers, and worksites to take advantage of the Health Department’s Breastfeeding Promotion and Support Program to help women get started and continue breastfeeding successfully. Breast milk provides babies with a healthy start in life, and promotes normal healthy growth long after breastfeeding ends.

A breastfeeding expert provides free breastfeeding education and counseling, support and referral; help with breastfeeding challenges; and help with making your practice, day care center and worksite breastfeeding friendly. “We are excited to announce that we now offer hospital grade breast pump rentals for eligible women who face breastfeeding challenges. This is another great tool we offer women to help them overcome many of the breastfeeding challenges they may face,” said Laurie Messinger, IBCLC (International Board of Certified Lactation Consultants) and coordinator of the Health Department’s Breastfeeding Support and Promotion Program.
The Breastfeeding Support and Promotion Programs also offers the following services:
  • Guidance for employers on establishing a worksite lactation (breastfeeding) program
  • Assistance with becoming a breastfeeding friendly pediatric or OB practice or daycare facility
  • Classes, presentations and support groups for women/families
“Enabling mothers to continue to breastfeed successfully is not just the mothers’ responsibility. When it comes to breastfeeding, as the saying goes, it takes a village to make it work, and all of us including mothers, fathers, employers, health care providers, day care providers, policy makers, and hospitals, are part of that village. No woman should have to give up breastfeeding her child because she couldn’t get enough information or support to make it work,” said Dr. Ruppert.
