Response to the Rockland Legislature’s Resolution Opposing Indian Point

To the Editor,

The resolution approved by the Rockland County Legislature opposing Indian Point’s license renewal is unfortunate.

Indian Point is a crucial source of affordable, reliable power for our region, generating 2,000 megawatts of electricity each day, enough for up to 2 million New York homes. With Entergy’s investing more than $1 billion in upgrades, Indian Point has garnered the highest safety rating from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for the past five years.

A recent independent study found that Indian Point is responsible for 5,400 New York jobs and $1.3 billion in annual economic stimulus for Rockland, Westchester, Orange, Putnam and Dutchess counties. The facility also generates $340 million in annual tax revenue for local, state, and federal governments.

Reliable, clean, safe, and affordable electricity from Indian Point is a crucial part of the foundation of our region’s economy—of jobs, communities, and families. Indian Point has proven its value over and over again, and it should continue to operate for years to come.

Sincerely,

Al Samuels
