Man tackles, holds landlord/burglar until police arrive

unnamedNEW HEMPSTEAD – A New Hempstead man is under arrest after he was caught by a couple allegedly burglarizing their apartment.

Ramapo Police said as they returned home, they spotted Joseph Casablanca, 55, of 29 Ellington Way. The boyfriend tackled Casablanca, who is their landlord, and held him until police arrived.

Casablanca was wearing blue rubber gloves and was leaving the apartment carrying a plastic bag containing the victim’s property. He was charged with felony burglary and misdemeanors of petit larceny and criminal possession of stolen property.

Casablanca was treated by medics at the scene for minor injuries suffered while he was tackled. He was then taken to the Rockland County Jail.
