NEW PASTOR AT THIELLS METHODIST CHURCH

Thiells United Methodist Church has a new pastor, Rev. Bernie Khaw. He and his wife Ruth moved to New York this month from Millen, GA. Reverend Jessica Campbell and her husband Jonathan have moved on. She is now pastor at Franklin Lakes Methodist Church, N.J. and he is manager of CUMAC (food and clothing etc. distribution) in Patterson, N.J.

Rev. Khaw became a pastor after a career as a research manager in chemical engineering. Even though that career was very rewarding, he felt unfulfilled until he answered God’s call into the ministry in 2006. He was ordained as an elder in the United Methodist Church in the South Georgia Annual Conference in 2009. Both the Khaws were born from Chinese parents in Burma (now called Myanmar), where they obtained their BS degrees in chemistry. Ethnic discrimination by a military dictatorship forced them to leave the country in 1969, eventually immigrating to the US. They were eventually able to finish graduate studies here, and were married in Portland, OR. Ruth was a medical technologist before she retired from that career and devoted her time to serve with her husband. She helps especially in the areas of missions outreach and music.

Their son A.J. works in a mobile clinic for uninsured children in the Bronx area. Their daughter Bliss works for an international business consulting firm in Manhattan, where her husband Dan also works at the Asia Society. The Khaws believe that God’s gracious, mysterious ways have brought them here to work faithfully for his kingdom, and to glorify his name, and that God is using them to show the inclusiveness of God’s love.
