Armed Guard at Atlanta School Stops Shooting

A school shooting in the Atlanta, Georgia area Thursday left one student seriously injured, but was broken up by an armed security officer before any fatalities occurred. According to the AP, “A student opened fire at his middle school Thursday afternoon, wounding a 14-year-old in the neck before an armed officer working at the school was able to get the gun away, police said.”

The incident has increased demand for armed guards at public school. Though initially ridiculed by national media, the idea of hiring such guards has gained popularity since NRA President Wayne LaPierre proposed it following the Newtown shootings in December.
