Rick Santorum announced today that he is officially suspending his campaign for the Republican nomination. The former senator did not cite specific reasons for his departure in his speech on Tuesday. Although a spokesperson for the campaign later said the major reason was Santorum’s concern about the health of his daughter Bella.

The end to Santorum’s campaign comes ahead of the primaries in his home state of Pennsylvania on April 24 as well as several other states, where he was expected to face an uphill battle against Mit Romney. In his announcement, Santorum stopped short of endorsing Romney, but a spokesperson for Santorum said there are plans for the two to discuss an official endorsement at some point soon.
