Fall Blizzard Leads to Power Outages, Closure of All School Districts

A virtually unprecedented late October Nor’easter swept through the region on Saturday, leaving 4 to 8 inches of snow in Rockland townships, and up to 2 feet in areas of upstate New York and New England.

The wet snow clung to the autumn trees which have yet to be denuded of their leaves. The snow and leaves weighed branches down which caused thousands to snap and led to over 27,000 power outages in Rockland County.

Due to the power outages and remaining downed powerlines, all school districts in Rockland County have announced closures for Monday, October 31. Schoolkids will have the entire day off to celebrate Halloween. In the meantime, Rocklanders wait to see if mischief night will be extra trouble this year, with kids excited by the snowfall and the unexpected day off tomorrow.

Over 10,000 Rockland households are still without power as of Sunday evening. An emergency shelter has been set up at Rockland Community College Fieldhouse for those that cannot find other arrangements.
